Homemade Sausage Gravy with biscuits is a rich and hearty breakfast that will satisfy even the biggest appetites. It’s ready in minutes, and pairs perfectly with my melted butter biscuits. Comfort food at its finest!
MUST TRY EASY SAUSAGE GRAVY
I worked at Hardee’s when I was a teenager, and sausage gravy and biscuits was one of the most popular breakfast menu items.
But I never tried it. And my mom never made it at home. So I made it halfway through my adult life without ever eating biscuits and gravy. I know, it’s scandalous.
Then a few years ago, my 16 year old son, who happens to be one of the biggest sausage fans on the planet, asked “Mom, how come you’ve never made biscuits and gravy?” I had no answer for him. So I decided that it was high time I whipped up a batch of biscuits and sausage gravy.
Guys, it is SO good! Definitely not something you should eat every day, but such a comforting breakfast for special occasions. Truth be told, sometimes we have it for dinner at my house.
What is the difference between sausage gravy and country gravy?
Both white gravy recipes usually contain a thickener such as flour, and milk or cream. Black pepper gives both of them a speckled appearance and great flavor. The main difference is that country gravy doesn’t contain sausage.
In addition, butter is used for country gravy, but sausage gravy doesn’t always need additional fat to make the roux. Usually the sausage has enough fat on its own.
HOW TO MAKE HOMEMADE SAUSAGE GRAVY
- Brown sausage in a large skillet. Add flour, and stir till all the sausage is coated, and the grease is absorbed.
- Gradually stir in milk, then salt, pepper, and chicken base. Keep cooking and stirring over medium heat till mixture comes to a boil.
- Continue cooking and stirring for a least a minute, until gravy is thickened. I like mine quite thick, so I cooked for a few minutes longer.
- Serve over hot homemade biscuits for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
What to serve with biscuits and gravy?
- It’s great with fresh fruit on the side. We especially love fruit salad with honey lime dressing. You can serve it with any type of fruit you love.
- Really want to fill hungry bellies? Serve it alongside poached, scrambled, or fried eggs.
- When I serve it for dinner, I will often whip up a quick green garden salad.
HOW TO STORE LEFTOVERS
You can keep leftover gravy in the refrigerator for 3-5 days if stored in an airtight container. If it seperates, just whisk it together. It does thicken as it chills, so you may need to stir in a bit of milk or cream.
I like to reheat it in a a bowl in the microwave, then pour it over the biscuits. But you can also reheat it in a saucepan over medium heat.
Can you freeze sausage gravy?
Unfortunately, I don’t recommend freezing gravy made with milk or cream. It tends to separate as it thaws.
VARIATIONS:
- If you like a bit of heat, add some red pepper flakes with the salt and pepper.
- Biscuits not your thing? Try serving this gravy over toast or even potatoes.
- We use regular breakfast sausage, but you can substitute spicy Italian sausage. Just make sure to break it into small chunks as you cook it.
