This is the BEST Dutch Apple Pie recipe ever! I have never, ever tasted one that is as good as this. It will knock your socks off!
It’s that time of year when everyone starts baking pies, and I have several unbeatable pie recipes you need to try. French Silk Pie and Banana Cream Pie are two more favorites.
The apples on our tree are ripe, so here is the first in a series of apple recipes I will be posting. No one in my family is really fond of pie crust, so I always make a crumb topping for my apple pies.
Then while searching online, I found a recipe at Your Homebased Mom that didn’t have a traditional pie crust at all, it just used the buttery crumbs on the bottom! I wanted to try it, but among other things it called for self rising flour, which I don’t have. So I tweaked the recipe and came up with this pie.
What’s the difference between apple pie and Dutch apple pie?
Dutch apple pie has a crumbly topping typically made from flour, butter, and sugar. It is sweeter than the pastry crust that tops traditional apple pie.
What are the best apples to use for baking pies?
Tart, firm apples work best for apple pies and other baked goods. I like to use Granny Smith, Jonathon, and Golden Delicious apples. Macintosh apples also work well. I actually think it’s best to combine two types of apples!
How to Make Dutch Apple Pie
Ingredients needed:
- flour
- sugar
- baking powder
- salt
- egg yolk
- butter
- apples (I like Granny Smith apples)
- cinnamon
For this apple pie, you don’t even need to roll out a crust, so it couldn’t be more simple!
- You make a crumb mixture out of flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, egg yolk, and melted butter.
- You press half of the crumbs into a deep dish 9-inch pie pan.
- Top with sliced apples coated with cinnamon and sugar.
- Then sprinkle the remaining crumb mixture on top.
- Now just pop the pie in the oven. So easy!
How do you know when Dutch apple pie is done?
Bake the pie till the crumbs are golden brown and the apples are tender. The filling will be thick and bubbly.
Does apple pie need to be refrigerated?

I was looking for a good Dutch apple pie. I found this apple pie. I liked the crumb on the top. My husband keep saying what did you make it smells so good. I put it on our porch until we eat. I ask him if he was ready for dessert and he said yeah. I brought the pie in , he loves apple pie but this did not look like the apple I make. He tasted it and Loved it. I made the pie on Friday. We are having friends over tonight and my husband ask me if I had enough to make another apple pie. Great Idea! I know they will love it as much as we do. I will be back to look at all of your recipes

I picked some apples in early October and want to prepare the apples and freeze for a pie for Thanksgiving. Would it be better to cook and freeze just the apple filling right now or make the whole pie and freeze before I cook, or cook the whole pie before I freeze?
Kara Cook
I’ve never frozen apples because I’m afraid they’d turn soggy, but it might work. I would actually partially bake the pie (maybe 25-30 minutes), then cool completely and freeze it. When ready to serve, bake it till the crumbs are golden brown. Let me know how it turns out!

I tried this recipe and it was fabulous. It was so easy to make. I cooked it for 10mins longer and it was perfect. Everyone wanted a second slice!

Kara- I just made this as an apple tart (enamored with my new 11 inch tart pan) and I can’t believe those beautiful crumbs!. I’ve long been trying to duplicate a dutch apple pie I tasted in Amish country and this is even better. Thank you! Crumbs get me every time- on
coffeecake, etc.

I’m with you Barb, crumbs are the best! So glad it turned out even better than you had hoped. It is my favorite apple pie for sure!
