Miracle Whip Chocolate Cake – Yes, it might sound strange, but this chocolate cake recipe is simply delicious!
I’ve mentioned this before, but cake is not usually my first choice of dessert. For me to like cake, it has to be pretty much amazing. Store bought cake with shortening frosting does not cut it. Bleck! I am always on the lookout for a great cake recipe, and Bundt cakes are usually my favorite.
This Miracle Whip Chocolate Cake is definitely a winner. I know it sounds disgusting (I thought the same thing) but it is delicious! Let me tell you how I came to find it. . .
We were shopping for the food for girls camp last year and needed Miracle Whip for sandwiches. The huge jar at Costco cost the same amount as the small one at the grocery store. Since we were feeding 50 people for a week, we bought the big one. And then we had leftovers. Lots of them.
I got stuck with the monster size tub of Miracle Whip. I didn’t want to waste it, and I knew my family would never be able to finish it off before it went bad.
So I googled “recipes with Miracle Whip”. When I saw that all the top results were for Miracle Whip Chocolate Cake, I was kind of grossed out. Grossed out, but intrigued. So I clicked on a few of them.
Apparently the recipe came about during the war when butter was rationed and Miracle Whip was plentiful. Or something like that. And to my surprise, all the recipes looked delicious and had great reviews. I know, shocking.
I decided to go for it and give the recipe a try. And boy was I surprised. This is one of the most moist and yummy chocolate cakes I have ever tasted!
Give it a try!

Can you use mayonnaise instead of miracle whip in the cake recipe?
Kara Cook
I haven’t tried it, but I think that should work just fine. š

If you use strong coffee in place of the water it really is better.

Kathy my guess is you are using an eletric mixer to mix your brownie mix, or you are using a too small pan. When mixing brownies you just need to moisten ingredients, it is not a cake. Next check your pan size you may be trying to bake a recipe for 9×12 in a 9×9 pan it won’t work. Or maybe your oven is not calibered and you are under temperature. Last but not least when baking you should always use the middle locacation of the oven. This is just a few reasons you maybe having runny brownies middle.

I have been looking for this recipe forever. I used to make it when I first got married and I lost the recipe about 40 years ago and gave up trying to find it in my archives of old recipes. I can’t wait to make it again for our churches coffee hour. I just saw your version of it while browsing the internet. Thank you, thank you.

Hi Kara,
First let me say I love your blog and creative ideas. I’m with ya when it comes to cake, it has to be gooood! I’m more of a cookie person. However, I’m gonna try this one. Did you use the same chocolate frosting as on your Oreo cake?? Because the frosting is equally important don’t ya think?
Blessings,
Lisa
