We chose Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray as the paint color in our new house, and I am absolutely in love with it! I think it is the perfect gray color.
Thanks so much to Sherwin-Williams for providing the paint for this project!
Here is a picture of the house when we moved in. It was painted a cream color. We had cream colored walls in our last house for over a decade before I painted over them. It’s not a terrible color, I just didn’t want to live with it again.
Choosing a paint color can be HARD, I know. In our last house I think I bought six different paint samples and painted them all over the place to try and make a decision. This time around I knew I wanted a nice neutral gray.
When we were thinking about building, I visited the Parade of Homes, and visited a lot of model homes. Anytime I saw a wall color I loved, I would ask what it was.
After four or five answers of “It’s Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray.”, I knew I had found my paint color. It looked good in all types of houses and all types of decor. Here’s a photo I took in the bedroom of one of the homes:
We painted the entry, kitchen, family room, hall, and my daughter’s room in Repose Gray. We will be painting the bathrooms as well, but first I have some wallpaper to remove. It is such a great color that it looks great in all of the rooms, no matter the time of day, and with any type of lighting.
Here is the kitchen after being painted Repose Gray. The previous owners (who happen to be our friends), stopped by last week and commented how much larger the space looks with the new paint color. It’s hard to tell that from a photo, but it really does!
So many friends who have come to our home have commented on the paint color and asked what it is. It really is the perfect grey color!
Here’s some shots of the fireplace before and after. Of course adding some decorations makes a big difference in addition to the paint color!
We still haven’t decorated the entry, but the new paint was a good start!
We still have plans to replace the countertops and paint the cabinets to match the new paint color. I can’t wait till I am fully recovered from surgery and can get to work!
We are also getting new sofas, a rug, and some type of tables. That’s a post for another day. I can’t wait to share the finished space with you. But man, the new paint color was a great way to start this whole house transformation!
We used the Emerald Interior Acrylic Latex Paint from Sherwin-Williams. I went with a satin finish, and I love it. As a mom of five, I need my paint to be scrubbable. I have already had to wipe off fingerprints, marker, watercolor paints, and more food splatters than I can count. This paint cleans up really well!
I usually let my paint cure for at least a week before I let anything touch it. But two days after we painted, my boys lined about a dozen frames against the wall in my daughter’s room. I didn’t notice for a couple days, and when I saw them I panicked. Some of them were heavy, so I was just sure they had left marks on the wall. Nope. In just a short amount of time the paint had hardened. I was so relieved!
If you are looking for a durable and beautiful gray paint color, I highly recommend Sherwin-Williams Repose Gray. You will love it!

What white color did you use on the ceilings ‽
Kara Cook
We just left the ceiling the same white color that was on it when we moved in. Unfortunately, the previous owners didn’t leave any paint, so we don’t know what color it is. Any white color that you like will work just fine. They even make paint especially for ceilings that is thicker so it doesn’t drip as you apply it. Good luck!

I have repose gray in my home but it’s the flat color. Do you know if the satin finish changed the color a bit from flat to satin. The emerald-interior-acrylic-latex-paint is the brand on the walls in repose gray right?
Kara Cook
I have never used the flat paint, but my guess is that even if the color is the same, the reflection of light on a satin finish may make it appear to be a different color. And yes, I did use the emerald interior paint. 🙂

I just painted all of our rooms in our home Repose Gray! Love it! I also re-did all wood work and kitchen cabinets white! It definitely brightens everything up making it fresh! We are on the next step to re-do flooring. I love how your flooring isn’t too dark but still goes well w/ your walls. Do you know the color?? Thanks!! Your house looks great!! 🙂
Kara Cook
Hooray for Repose Gray! I have actually since painted my cabinets (uppers white, lowers dark gray). I love it even more now. I love my flooring, but unfortunately I can’t remember what it’s called. Just checked our extra planks out in the garage, and they aren’t labeled. Sorry. 🙁

I’m looking at repose gray and agreeable gray for my entire house. They both look amazing. My daughter painted 25% repose gray in her room she loves it. To me it looks like it has a little blue undertone. Do you see any blue undertones in your house in different lighting?
Kara Cook
With the lighting at my house, I don’t see any blue undertones, they tend to be more on the warm side. But it does totally depend on your space.

I am looking to use Repose Grey in our bedrooms. We painted our Hallway in Classic Silver by Behr, a fairly dark silver. Would this work?
Martha Flowers
I am considering painting the home I am about to purchase Repose Gray. I like the color but my only concern is the house does not have a lot of natural light. Would this color still be a good choice?
Kara Cook
I have it in a hallway and a bathroom with just one window. I still think it looks fantastic!
Carol
Love the repose gray in your kitchen. Our lake house has Oak cabinets and white beadboard backsplash green/ gray tones on laminate countertops with white beadboard base for the island. I like my Oak as the woodwork goes throughout our home. It feels warm to me. Will repose gray work here? We also have 3 story vaulted ceiling. Wondering about color there. Same Berber white gray carpet throughout.
Kara Cook
I haven’t seen it with oak cabinets, but I think it’s such a great neutral gray that it would look good with just about anything! I recommend buying a sample and giving it a try. 🙂
Jennifer
Hi what kind of white did you paint your kitchen cabinets? What countertop did you select I.e color, and type (quartz etc…) paint looks amazing.
Kara Cook
I haven’t painted the cabinets yet – hopefully soon! We got a quartz countertop from a local company. I can’t even remember what it’s called, but I really do love it!
Tanya
The house looks great! What did you use for the trim?
Kara Cook
I just use Behr bright white straight out of the can. I like to use semi-gloss for my trim because it’s very scrubbable, but satin works great as well.
Sabrina Doner
No undertone Colors with Repose Gray? Like blue, green, purple or beige? That’s what I’m worried about with grays, I’m considering this gray and hoping it’s a true neutral gray with no colour surprises when it’s dark out, fingers crossed, I’m hoping to know before I buy it tomorrow 🙂 your place looks amazing btw
Kara Cook
Sorry, I just saw this. If it had an undertone, it would be more beige, but only in certain lighting. Most of the time at my house it just looks gray. I hope you’ve already painted and are loving it at your house as well!
Melissa
I look forward to seeing your update! Your house looks so nice it has inspired me to paint Repose throughout my whole house! I’ painting my oak trim white. I’m waiting on the kitchen cabinets as that is such a big project. But I will probably do white. I like your idea of white and dark gray! I don’t have an island so not sure if I want all white or lowers maybe gray? Can’t wait to see your cabinets once you get to them.
Kara Cook
Thanks so much Melissa! I hope you love the Repose gray as much as I have. Even if you don’t have an island, white upper cabinets and gray lowers still looks fantastic. I cannot wait to get mine finished!
Misty
What color of gray are you using for lower cabinets? Or what color would you recommend? With the uppers in white and the rest of the room in the repose gray?
Colette
I hope you guys are all right. I’m venturing off today to buy this colour for my basement!????
Kara Cook
I hope you love it as much as I do!! 🙂
Melissa
What color will you paint your cabinets? I’m painting my house repose gray right now. In the future I will need to paint my oak kitchen cabinets. Would love to see your plans for your cabinets and countertop.
Kara Cook
I am planning on painting my cabinets white, and my island a dark gray. I was hoping to have it finished by now, but that’s just life for ya! We do have a new countertop and backsplash, and I am loving those. As soon as we replace the outlet covers, I’ll share the update. 🙂
Pilar Mc Shine
Hi, what type of sheen did you use on the walls and trim?
Kara Cook
Sorry I didn’t see your question earlier. I like to use satin on my walls and semi-gloss for my trim, but that is just a matter of preference.
Susan
Can anyone recommend a complimentary darker gray color for my cabinets for an open great room ( kitchen/living/dining) that is paint response great. Current cabinets are yellow birch and not complimentary. I could go white line trim an baseboards but would like to explore the options. Thank you.
Kara Cook
I love all the colors on the Repose Gray swatch. I’m considering painting my kitchen island Gauntlet Gray. It goes well with both my warm and cool tones. You can see all the colors on the swatch here: https://www.sherwin-williams.com/homeowners/color/find-and-explore-colors/paint-colors-by-family/SW7015-reposegray#/7018/?s=coordinatingColors&p=PS0
I do recommend getting different paint samples and trying them out on your walls. I buy the samples at Home Depot for $3. They can match just about any brand of paint. It is very helpful to actually see them in your own home!
Marie
Does it look dark in rooms with not much natural light?
Kara Cook
I have it in my bathroom that doesn’t have much natural light, and I think it still looks fantastic!
Mary Galvin
Love this! Which shade of white did you use for trim?
Kara Cook
I just use the un-tinted Ultra Bright White paint straight from the can. I used Behr brand because that’s what I had on hand.
Leah
Didn’t you happen to lighten them repose gray by chance ? I swatched this color and it looked way darker . THanks
Kara Cook
No, I did not have them lighten it. It looks lighter on my walls than it did on the swatch. It goes on darker as well, but lightens as it dries. My friend actually used a shade darker, and hers still doesn’t look too dark. Hope that helps!
Mindy
I love the way the paint makes your house look! What kind of flooring did you put in?
Kara Cook
We used Mannington vinyl planks, and it is my favorite flooring ever! The color we used is called Seaport Surf.
Kellie
I just painted my entire basement this color based on your recommendation and I love it! It really is the perfect gray! Thank you!
Kara Cook
You are so welcome! Glad you love it in your house as much as I love it in mine! 🙂
Sarah
It is such a great color that it looks great in all of the rooms, no matter the time of day, and with any type of lighting.
Melinda
looks great!
Kara Cook
Thanks Melinda! The move was stressful, but we are sure enjoying the house so far!
